  • Reacting quickly enough with adequate flash power to freeze a leaping Salmon takes skill and patience. This silvery Salmon was photographed at a relatively unknown waterfall in Perthshire after five unsuccessful days.

There was a costly lesson behind this picture. To get this picture I actually went into the water. A Border Terrier, excited by the leaping Salmon was trying to catch a fish. I asked the owner to take the dog away but it escaped and came back. In its urgency, it bumped a tripod I was using that was holding two professional flashguns, which then fell into the waterfall and pool below - over £1000.00 worth of equipment. That was an expensive day.

I managed to capture the action as two Blackcocks fought each other at the lek. These stunning birds can produce a tremendous volume of noise at a lek as well and the action all gets cranked up when the Greyhens arrive.

This Black Highland cow was photographed during a snowstorm. She looked very fed up but in reality was probably relatively unaffected by the conditions.

Hares normally box in  the middle of very expansive fields where they can see any predators or people approaching from a long way off. To get this photo I had to get within fifteen metres, which took many days of work. The actual boxing is a female seeing off an overly keen male, but only lasted for about two seconds, so quick reactions were required for this photograph.

These Collies used to look out through an old farm building wall window slit, to see what was going on in the farmyard. They would pile up on top of each other to look out. It makes a lovely picture of these very intelligent dogs.

This Short Eared Owl took a look at me as it flew by. I was in leaf camouflage gear, so it probably couldn't understand why I was moving unlike any bush it had ever seen before.

  • This small flight of Goldeneye drakes and ducks flew past me on the River Spey in Scotland, with one duck swinging vertically in alarm at my presence. Notice, despite that, it's head stayed perfectly level. The photo captured all at different stages in flight and showed their wing patterns - something which no artist could do without a dead bird. It almost has the feel of a B&W line drawing. A lovely moment to have captured.

For about ten minutes when the sun sets on a clear sky day, it can give off a beautiful golden glow which is the perfect light for photography. In many years of travelling, I had never encountered a Highland Cow in winter snow being lit by these precise light conditions, so this picture represents a very rarely seen moment.

There are many lovely glens in Scotland, but they can at their most serenely beautiful when covered in deep snow, as in the case of Glen Isla, when all can be silent as though most of life has gone for a long sleep during the tough winter months.

Grey Wagtails are birds of fast flowing rivers in Britain and Ireland. They are beautifully splashed with yellow on their breasts and vent regions. Because they are quite small, their striking appearance is often overlooked. I wanted to capture a photograph of a male on a mountain stream showing the bird and the water. It took several days of work to achieve.

This Heron regularly used this derelict boat on Mull to wait out the high tide, before going back to fishing. I don't believe there was much chance of it floating out to sea.

  • The Insh marshes are a floodplain for the River Spey, used by hundreds of wildfowl in the winter. This picture shows it in autumnal colour glory. This picture is available as a metal print which can be hung as it is or inserted into a glassless frame. This 48" x 12" high gloss and definition print will look superb on any wall.

  • In Kenya, it is difficult to see some animals due to their rarity. Leopards are not rare but very elusive animals. I managed to locate this leopard because the wildlife indicated his presence to me by making alarm calls. An understanding of animal behaviour helps in the field as much as your eyes.

Leopards are powerful predators and stalk in to catch prey. They are beautifully marked animals which in the past was their downfall, as they were hunted for their gorgeously patterned coats. Luckily this is far less common today.

It is difficult to get the light conditions that allow you to properly expose the luminance of the moon and yet not completely underexpose the scenery. I achieved this in an early morning spring day, using a long telephoto lense.

This Short Eared Owl was hunting along some rough grass fields for voles. He sat briefly on a lichen covered post giving me the chance to capture its photograph in the soft morning light.

This pheasant was in woodland with the sun highlighting the beautiful luminescence of his breast feathers. The glossy detail and colours of the Chromaluxe print make this an outstanding picture.

This was one of the loveliest colourful sunsets of 2015, but the camera didn't capture the full range of colours on view.

Taken about 5 o clock in the morning, the chromaluxe print gives this photograph an almost 3D look. Roe deer are normally very shy in areas where they are shot, so I was very lucky to get this lovely portrait.

The stag at the bottom of the picture was rutting at the base of some high hills on the Isle of Mull. The dramatic scenery was enhanced by the autumn colours, so I tried to take the hills in with the stag, making for a very unusual photograph.

This stag was caught shaking the rainwater out of his coat after a heavy downpour. Taken in spring, the other stag had already cast his antlers to make way for a new set of antlers to regrow.

This Red Squirrel looked superb in his winter coat complete with tufts on his ears. As he climbed the tree trunk he looked round just long enough, to give me the chance for this early morning sunlit photograph.

These seashells were lying on the Solway coast with most of the sand derived from broken down seashells. The colourful jumble makes a picture you could study for hours and still see new things. It would make an ideal picture for a bathroom or study.

Teal are small but brightly coloured ducks that live in marshes and mudflats. As a youngster, I had seen many paintings portraying duck flocks landing in a marsh, so I wanted to capture just such a moment on camera. It required a fast shutter speed but enough depth of field to have all the birds sharp in the photograph. Not so easy.

Nor was the time it took with many days of work to achieve the image.
